Sonic Meditations: Synthesizing the Supernatural - Exhibición individual en "MXCL BNL LAB", Whittier, Ca. E.U.A.  31 de mayo - 5 de julio de 2025.
The MXCL BNL LAB presents Sonic Meditations: Synthesizing the Supernatural, a sound installation by the Mexicali-based interdisciplinary artist Adrián Pereda Vidal. The artist produced three unique soundworks which resonate in unison throughout the LAB. The primary composition – digitally synthesized on Día de Muertos – is accompanied by two recordings: the ambient sounds of the street outside Pereda Vidal’s home in Mexicali, and the subtle scratching of charcoal on paper. Each composition emanates from a distinct set of speakers placed throughout the gallery, allowing visitors to explore the layered acoustics from shifting physical perspectives as they traverse the space.
Sonic Meditations invites visitors to immerse themselves in a paranormal state of contemplation. The soundscape inhabits the gallery like a specter, evoking a dissonant sense of both presence and absence. The installation explores the idea that paranormal experiences – such as an inexplicable bump in the night or a sudden, chilling silence – are epiphenomena: faint reverberations from a world beyond perception. Synthesized graphics projected on the gallery wall generate in response to the modulations of the primary composition, producing a visual epiphenomenon of this sonic manifestation. The two complementary soundworks, meanwhile, are epiphenomena of their own – audible traces of daily life along the border and the ritual of artistic creation. To activate the installation, Pereda Vidal encourages visitors to saturate a white circle placed in the center of the gallery floor with charcoal – a meditative act of inscription that echoes the sonic terrain.
